What Is Womens Equality Day Why August 26

August 26 of each year is designated in the United States as Womens Equality Day. Instituted by Rep. Bella Abzug and first established in 1971, the date commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, the Woman Suffrage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote on the same basis as men.   (Many women still had to fight for the right to vote when they belonged to other groups that had barriers to voting: people of color, for instance.) Less well known is that the day commemorates the 1970 Womens Strike for Equality, held on August 26 on the 50th anniversary of the passage of woman suffrage. The first public body to call for the right of women to vote was the Seneca Falls convention for womens rights, at which the resolution on the right to vote was more controversial than other resolutions for equal rights. The first petition for universal suffrage was sent to Congress in 1866. The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was sent to the states for ratification on  June 4, 1919, when the Senate endorsed the Amendment.   The passage by the states proceeded quickly, and Tennessee passed the ratification proposal in their legislature on August 18, 1920. After turning back an attempt to reverse the vote, Tennessee notified the federal government of the ratification, and on August 26, 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment to was certified as ratified. In the 1970s, with the so-called second wave of feminism, August 26 again became an important date.   In 1970, on the 50th anniversary of the 19th Amendments ratification, the National Organization for Women  organized the Womens Strike for Equality, asking women to stop working for a day to highlight inequalities in pay and education, and the need for more child care centers. Women took part in events in 90 cities.   Fifty thousand people marched in New York City, and some women took over the Statue of Liberty. To commemorate the voting rights victory, and to rededicate to winning more demands for womens equality, member of Congress Bella Abzug of New York introduced a bill to establish Womens Equality Day on August 26, commending and supporting those who continued to work for equality. The bill calls for an annual presidential proclamation of Womens Equality Day. Here is the text of the 1971 Joint Resolution of Congress designating August 26 of each year as Womens Equality Day: WHEREAS, the women of the United States have been treated as second-class citizens and have not been entitled the full rights and privileges, public or private, legal or institutional, which are available to male citizens of the United States; andWHEREAS, the women of the United States have united to assure that these rights and privileges are available to all citizens equally regardless of sex; andWHEREAS, the women of the United States have designated August 26, the anniversary date of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, as symbol of the continued fight for equal rights: andWHEREAS, the women of United States are to be commended and supported in their organizations and activities,NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that August 26th of each year is designated as Women’s Equality Day, and the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation annually in commemoration of that day in 1920, on which the women of America were first given the right to vote, and that day in 1970, on which a nationwide demonstration for women’s rights took place. In 1994, the presidential proclamation by then President Bill Clinton included this quote from Helen H. Gardener, who wrote this to Congress in asking for the passage of the 19th Amendment: Let us either stop our pretence before the nations of the earth of being a republic and having equality before the law or else let us become the republic we pretend to be. A presidential proclamation in 2004 of Womens Equality Day by then President George W. Bush explained the holiday this way: On Womens Equality Day, we recognize the hard work and perseverance of those who helped secure womens suffrage in the United States. With the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920, American women gained one of the most cherished rights and fundamental responsibilities of citizenship: the right to vote.The struggle for womens suffrage in America dates back to the founding of our country. The movement began in earnest at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, when women drafted a Declaration of Sentiments proclaiming they had the same rights as men. In 1916,  Jeannette Rankin  of Montana became the first American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives, despite the fact that her fellow women would not be able to vote nationally for 4 more years. President Barack Obama in 2012 used the occasion of the proclamation of Womens Equality Day to highlight the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Trade Act: On Womens Equality Day, we mark the anniversary of our Constitutions 19th Amendment, which secured the right to vote for Americas women. The product of profound struggle and fierce hope, the 19th Amendment reaffirmed what we have always known: that America is a place where anything is possible and where each of us is entitled to the full pursuit of our own happiness. We also know that the defiant, can-do spirit that moved millions to seek suffrage is what runs through the veins of American history. It remains the wellspring of all our progress. And nearly a century after the battle for womens franchise was won, a new generation of young women stands ready to carry that spirit forward and bring us closer to a world where there are no limits on how big our children can dream or how high they can reach.To keep our Nation moving ahead, all Americans -- men and women -- must be able to help provide for their families and contribute fully to our economy. That years proclamation included this language: I call upon the people of the United States to celebrate the achievements of women and recommit to realizing gender equality in this country.

Cell Phones Friend or Foe - 1037 Words

The effects of technology on society will always be a double edged sword. The debate is a never ending one, in which both sides have valid and compelling arguments. The Industrial Revolution reduced manual labor in the long run, but had negative consequences such as child labor and sweatshop conditions. Nuclear Power reduces the cost of producing energy, but raises serious environmental issues like pollution and radiation. In this day in age refusing to assimilate to at least some form of modern living is simply not an option. One invention causing controversy today that has yet to cease being alter, modified, and â€Å"improved† since its debut is the ever present cell phone. Even as I sit here typing this paper, my own shiny,†¦show more content†¦Movie Theaters now have clips dedicated solely to reminding audience members to silence their phones. These are things that were once common courtesy and didn’t need reminding. It is easier for someone who grew up in a previous generation to notice the real effects of cell phones on society. Almost all kids today have grown up around this technology and many are using it at younger ages. Cell phones appear to have replaced the need for everyday items such as alarm clocks, calendars, and watches. They also have taken place of our memory in several instances. Many people, including myself, no longer find it necessary to memorize phone numbers since they can quickly be obtained by scrolling through our cell phone, which is sure to be with us. Important upcoming dates can be programmed into our phones, complete with a reminder that will ensure we don’t miss an event. The thought here seems to be the more information you can access from the same source, the simpler life becomes. It seems like almost everyday a new feature is being added to this handheld device. They can now do everything from take a picture or a video, to allowing access to youâ₠¬â„¢re e-mail, to playing your favorite downloaded songs. For my research, I observed a four year old preschool class at KidsFirst Preschool composed of eight boys and four girls for a total of twelve children. The average socioeconomic status was middle class. The classroom walls were painted white except for one red accent wall. A square carpeted area in one corner of the room was set up with a play kitchen and play laundry area. The bathroom was in the back left corner and was flanked by a chalkboard and a three-drawer storage unit that housed various toys the children could play with during center time. Children begin using their hands immediately after birth to investigate their bodies and the environment in which they are in. This means that one child may be able to print his or her name at 3 years and 6 months old while another child may not be able to do so till he or she is 4 years and 6 months old. It is a folly for Benedick that he rules out the possibility   that if such a perfect woman existed at all , she might   not choose him. Benedick’s reaction to hearing that Beatrice is secretly in love with him: (2.3.181-213):2 paras. On her husband like qualities. On why he is so easily duped by his friends. In the speech following the trap   set by Pedro, Claudio and Leanato, Benedict starts behaving like a very compromising lover who is willing to bury past   his antagonism with Beatrice. As suggested by Pedro, Benedick begins his introspection – self-examination to improve his chances of being a good and worthy husband. Like a repentant lover and future husband he feels he has unfairly treated the fair Beatrice, and her love â€Å"must be requited†. (2.3.216) He also decides that he â€Å"must not seem proud.† (2.3.220). He concludes that she is fair, virtuous and wise for having fallen in love with him. He has now grown wise to listen to people’s criticism which would lead to the improvement of his personality. For having so long opposing and railing against marriage, he makes a 180 degree turn and pledges to â€Å"be horribly in love with her.† (2.3.226) He further argues that he must break his vow of celibacy so that â€Å"the world must be peopled.†(2.3.233). Being conditioned and brainwashed by Leanato, Pedro and Claudio he now discovers â€Å"some marks of love in her.†(2.3.236)His conclusion – â€Å"I am a villain; if I do not love her.† (2.3.253) – is a proof of his delusion. In this speech Benedick recapitulates after eavesdropping the mock-serious conversations of Claudio, Pedro and Leanato who aver that Beatrice is dying for his love, but   is too modest â€Å"to wear her heart out first.† (2.3.195) What he so long regarded â€Å" a gull† now has become veritable truth; as he says, â€Å"This can be no trick: the conference was sadly borne.† Like the typical lover with   Ã¢â‚¬Å"imagination   all compact†, he is duped by the   prank played by Pedro and Claudio. He is unable to see through the â€Å"sport† to mislead both   the proud lovers to hold â€Å"an opinion of another’s dotage.† (2.3.208) The old and the experienced Prince and Governor are successful in manipulating the romantic but arrogant lovers to confess their love and overcome their egoes. All Beatrice’s objections like â€Å"Against my will† and forcing her on â€Å"knife’s point †¦to choke a daw withal.† (2.3.246) are romantically interpreted as signs of love. Benedick’s behavior does confirm Shakespeare’s view of lover in Midsummer Night’s Dream: â€Å"The   lunatic, the lover and the poet/Are of   imagination all compact.† (Midsummer, 5.1.7) Their wild imagination hardly resembles the reality. Qualities I like in a man or woman. Do I choose any qualities admired by Benedick? Why? Or why not? The qualities I like in a man are tenderness, affection, and a capacity for enduring relationship. He must not treat woman as a prized possession for his personal benefit; but treat her as an equal partner. The qualities admired by Benedick are male ego-centric and would not satisfy any modern woman. â€Å"Wise†, â€Å"noble† and â€Å"mild† are admirable qualities in male as well   female spouse. Some intellectual qualities like brilliant conversationalist and excellent musician are   welcome personality traits, but not a necessity. But â€Å"rich† indicates love of wealth and dowry which often creates problems in marital life. Benedick gives the impression of a customer with a shopping list of virtues rather than a lover. The company should act rationally and support and help in making the rational decisions. The main stakeholders of the Nissan Company are the Indian customers and customers from the developing countries. These innocent people are buying the unsafe cars that would cause their deaths in case they will get a car accident in the future (Sacconi, n.d.). The second stakeholder is the head of the NCAP because the program run by him is responsible for determining the safety of the vehicle and ensuring that they are suitable for the public or not (Aligica Tarko, 2015). The last one and important stakeholder, in this case, is the CEO of the company because he makes the decision regarding the spending on the safety of the vehicle.
